Competitor analysis with the Domain Comparison
Use the Domain Comparison to compare your domain to those of your strongest competitors. Find out who comes out on top in keyword rankings.
Today we want to learn two things:
- For which keywords do both domains rank, and who has the lead?
- For which keywords do the competition already rank, but you do not yet?
What's in it for me?
The Domain Comparison allows you to assess who has stronger rankings and whether you still need to invest resources to overtake your competitor for essential keywords.
In addition, looking at your competitor's rankings helps you discover new keywords you may not have thought of before and for which you do not yet have (good) rankings. After all, if you share a portfolio, you will also share relevant keywords.
How do I use the Domain Comparison?
Go to Keywords → Domain Comparison.
The Domain Comparison automatically loads your domain and all competitors defined in your project. The number of competitors depends on your XOVI NOW plan.
We now want to compare our website's rankings with the strongest competitor's, so we delete all other competitors from the list. |
You can also compare several domains. The more domains you compare, the smaller the overlap and, thus, the resulting data. After all, the Domain Comparison matches ALL the domains entered. |
Who ranks best for shared keywords?
The table shows keywords for which both domains rank in the top 100 search results. In addition, you receive data on search volume, CPC, and competitor density to better assess the value of individual keywords. You can sort and filter this table.
If you are not yet familiar with search volume, CPC & Co, we recommend the Keyword-KPI section in our Keyword Research Guide. |
For example, if you want to see your competitor's top rankings and compare them with yours, sort the table by your competitor's rankings.
Then, add a filter for search volume to display only results within the desired range, e.g., only keywords with a search volume of at least 100 queries per month. To do this, click on the funnel icon at the top right.
Click on a metric in the header to sort the table by that value.
This way, you can easily see where your competitor is ahead of you and by how much. Use these insights to improve individual rankings and catch up. |
A click on a keyword will take you directly to the Keyword Analysis. Check the Ranking Analysis tab to see which of your site's page ranks in the Top 100, who ranks in which position, which user questions are frequently asked, and more. |
How do I find keywords for which only my competitor ranks?
If you put your competitor's domain first, you can filter for keywords that the first domain (your competitor) ranks for but not the second (you).
Add a filter in the results table:
- Click Add Filter
- Select Comparison Mode
- Mode: Only the first domain must rank.
The table now lists keywords for which only your competitor is ranking, but you are not (yet!).
Search the list for keywords that are also interesting for your business. Add these keywords to the Keyword Planner to store them. |
