How to access the Keyword Planner
You can access Keyword Planner and create plans and groups via:
- Keyword Research sidebar integration.
- Keyword Planner under Projects → Planner
- Plan overview in the Planner tab of Keyword Research
1. Keyword Research sidebar integration
You’ll find the Keyword Planner integrated into Keyword Research. The integration makes it easy to create plans and groups without interrupting your research.

2. Keyword Planner Overview in Projects
Access the Keyword Planner to edit and create new plans and groups, analyze their potential, determine your next SEO steps and assign pages to keywords.

3. Keyword Planner tab in Keyword Research
In Keyword Research, switch to the Keyword Planner tab to get a quick overview of your plans and access them if you like. However, you can't create new plans and groups in this overview.

How do I create a Keyword Plan and Groups?
Plans, groups, and keywords are hierarchically structured. You can create as many plans and groups as you like wherever you can access the Keyword Planner.
We recommend that you first create a keyword research plan. During your research, drag & drop interesting keywords and sort them out later. |

1. Create plans and groups during keyword research
You can create plans and groups while conducting keyword research using the Keyword Planner sidebar integration.
You can add more plans and groups using the Plan and Group drop-down menus.
2. Create plans and groups in Planner
Head to Projects → Planner and click Add Plan to create a new plan and add groups and keywords at the same time.
Remember, the Planner is your Keyword Planner hub where you can manage and edit plans, groups, and keywords.
How do I add keywords to the Keyword Planner?
In Keyword Research, create or select a Keyword Plan and Group in the Keyword Planner integration. Flag keywords of interest and then drag and drop them into the Keyword Planner.
For any other keyword table in XOVI NOW, check the corresponding box, click Select Action, and select Add to planner.
How do I use the Keyword Planner?
Now, before you start working on the keywords collected during research, think about how you want to structure plans and groups of the Keyword Planner. It's often a good idea to imitate your website structure.
An example: We want to create keyword plans for our imaginary online store for pet supplies, "PeTastic" The store is structured into the following categories:
- Dogs
- Cats
- Small Pets
- Birds
- Magazine
These categories would be our plans. The sections are further divided into topics such as:
- Dog food
- Dog beds
- Dog toys
- Dog training
- etc.
These topics would be our groups created for the plan Dogs.
Create plans and groups that make sense for your business. Also, think about content for your blog/magazine, etc. |
Re-assign keywords to another Plan or Group
Now assign all collected keywords from the Keyword Research Plan to their final plans and groups. |
- Mark all related keywords
- Click Select Action
- Select Move to another plan or Assign to a group
Assign keywords to pages & discover missing pages
A golden rule of SEO is to create one page for each essential keyword. But how do you keep track of that? Well, the Keyword Planner lets you can assign a page (URL) to each keyword, even if the page does not yet exist.
Head to Projects → Planner, select a Plan and check out the Keywords tab. Edit the URL field to assign a page to a keyword. |
Check your existing content and rankings and find the page that was created for your keyword. Add the intended page's URL for your keyword. You can also define the URLs of future pages and add them to the list. |
If you find there's no page yet, we recomment to create an Advisor Task with a list of pages you still need to create. |
This feature allows you to figure out whether you are missing important pages, or whether a page was assigned multiple keywords that are not just variants.
Detect multiple keyword assignments
Click the URLs tab in the Planner. The tab provides a list of assigned pages, including the number of keywords assigned to that page. |
Have multiple pages been assigned to the same keyword? If so, check:
- if the keywords are simply variants of each other, e.g., leash dog training, dog training leashes. That's fine. They cover the same topic and Google will most likely rank that page for these variants anyway.
- if the keywords cover different topics, e.g., dog training leashes and dog training guide. These keywords have different user intent and should be tackled on seperate pages.
If the latter is true, figure out which of these keywords is intended for the respective page. You can tell by:
- the keyword optimization of the pages: For which keywords were the pages optimized? Check our Keyword Optimization Guide for comparison.
- The page's rankings. Check the page's position for each keyword. If the page ranks well for one keyword and so-so for the other, chances are that the page was not intended for the latter.
Check ranking: Enter the page's URL in the Smart Input field at the top right. XOVI NOW will then list the page's keyword rankings. Compare the rankings of all pages for the keyword. |
Identify high-potential groups to focus on first
In the Keyword Planner, select a plan or group you want to highlight in more detail. There you will find pie charts and graphs visualizing the distribution of Search volume, CPC, and Competitor within your groups.
Look at the charts. Which group has the highest search volume and, thus, high interest among potential customers? Which group has the highest CPC? It could make you a lot of money. Which group has the lowest competition?
Use the graphs to answer the follwoing questions:
- Which groups are popular with users(high search volume)?
- Which groups can bring in the highest sales (high CPC)?
- Which topics have your competitors not discovered yet (low CPC)?
- On which groups should you focus first?
- Where is untapped potential you weren't aware of before?
